Whale watchers

Dropped into Head of Bight this afternoon, just east of Nullarbor Roadhouse.

Southern Right Whale central this place. We counted 22 whales at one stage, all within view.

Highlight: a couple of mother whales teaching their calves to tail slap and breach about 300 metres from where we were standing.

Nullus arbor

Reached the eastern side of the Nullarbor Plain today.

This photo from near Nullarbor Roadhouse, South Australia, where there really is not a tree in sight.

Highway robbery

It's never great watching the fuel bowser tick over when you're travelling 15,000 kilometres around Australia.

But when the dollars are ticking over at more than double the litres it's downright scary.

Just paid $2.10 for unleaded fuel at Madura Roadhouse on the Nullarbor Plain, Western Australia. Ouch.

The moon cuts through

Camped on the Great Australian Bight last night, about thirty kilometres east of the WA/SA border.

Outside, I was listenting to the Southern Ocean pounding into the coastal cliffs and road trains thundering down the highway. Then I looked up. Just for a moment the moon shone through thick cloud cover.
